This is an ongoing experiment to record and compare the butterfly flight period among different years. I pick 10 butterfly species, most of which are common and easy to identify without a doubt. They are either migrants or residents overwintering in different ways. Their first and last record dates of the year, observed by me, in Toronto area are displayed in the chart. Obviously the results rely heavily on my field trips. I always try to go butterflying as much as possible, but I was less active in 2009, 2013 and first 6 months in 2014. However, one can still easily see the much earlier occurrence of the butterflies in 2012 due to the abnormally warm spring.
This is actually a simplified version. Dr. Maxim Larrivée and his team are working on a much bigger scale. They are building a database for Canada and the United States. Please visit their website eButterfly.org and support their work.
Now that I have moved to New Jersey, I am continuing this experiment and adding the data of New Jersey. We can see the difference between these two places.
